From Panel to Play: Angel & Archangel

Soaring into today’s From Panel to Play is the millionaire, Warren Worthington III, better known as the hero Angel! This high-flying hero is a mutant and one of the founding members of the X-Men.

Warren’s best-known trait is his large white-feathered wings that allow him to ascend into the skies and perform feats of aerial acrobatics. He has been able to keep these wings secret thanks to their ability to fold up into a very small size, allowing him to hide them under his clothing. Warren began his superhero career rescuing people from peril and fighting crime on his own until discovered by Charles Xavier, recruited into the X-Men, and took the name Angel.

In Marvel: Crisis Protocol, Angel is a Threat Value 3 character with a fairly modest stat line of 5 Stamina on both sides and 3/3/3 defenses with Medium Speed along with the Flight Innate superpower. His Healing Factor (1) gives him a little extra survivability, but he is not intended to be a brawler.

Angel’s Flyby attack has him swooping through enemy groups and generating a little Power with each attack. This beam has a range of 3 and after the final attack is complete, Angel is Placed within Range 1 of the last target. This combines well with his Hostile Takeover Reactive superpower which triggers when he begins a move action as he will be in perfect position to trigger it after this attack. For 2 Power, Hostile Takeover lets him Push a nearby enemy character toward him a Short distance after the move action is completed.

His second Reactive superpower is Air Lift. This is another superpower that triggers when he begins a move action. Unlike Hostile Takeover, this superpower allows him to Place an allied character within Range 2 of its current location. This Place doesn’t have to be toward Angel’s final location either, giving him plenty of flexibility in repositioning his team.

Both of these Reactive superpowers can be used during a single move action, allowing tricks that can remove an enemy from an objective and put an allied character in their place or bring an enemy and an ally together to enable follow-up activations that can Daze enemy characters more efficiently.

Angel’s second attack pays homage to his original superhero name. Avenging Angel is a powerful attack with a Strength of 7, a chance to Stun the target, and the ability to Throw most enemies a Short distance.

Angel comes with multiple Team Tactic Cards including the Ultimate Sacrifice card. This Reactive card allows Angel to take attacks intended for nearby allies for 2 Power. If the attack proceeds to Daze or KO Angel, the character the attack was intended for will remove 3 Damage and all of their special conditions!

Battles don’t always go your way. Warren knows this very well, as he was defeated during a brutal battle and his wings were amputated. This took a toll on him and he eventually fell into the hands of Apocalypse, who molded him into an angel of death. Thus was Archangel born.

In Marvel: Crisis Protocol, this story is told with Warren’s second Team Tactic Card, Fallen. This card is played reactively when Angel would flip his card from his Healthy side to his Injured side. All nearby enemy characters are Pushed a Short distance away from Angel and gain the Bleed special condition as Archangel rises! Archangel’s card is flipped to the Injured side and he gains the same amount of Power Angel had.

Apocalypse’s machinations changed Warren Worthington III in profound ways. His beautiful white wings were gone, but in their place he grew metallic wings that are razor sharp and able to deliver a powerful neurotoxin to his enemies. The effectiveness of the new Archangel resulted in him gaining a new title: Death! He became one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen and led the Horsemen in battle.

As Archangel, Warren brings a new set of abilities to the battlefield. He retains his Flight and Medium Speed, but he is much more offensive in nature and delivers multiple special conditions. As a Threat Value 4 character his stats are enhanced to have 5 Stamina on his Healthy side and 6 on his Injured side to go along with better defenses of 4/3/4.

His attacks are also enhanced. Razor Wing Strike has a Strength of 5 and generates Power based on the damage it deals and has two triggered effects. The first is Toxic Flechettes, which gives the target the Bleed or Poison special condition when a Wild is rolled. If two Wilds are rolled, the target gets both! If a Critical is rolled, Overwing is triggered which forces Archangel to be Placed within Range 1 of the attack’s target.

Razor Wing Strike has the potential to combine well with his second attack, Avatar of Death. This attack costs 3 Power and has a Strength of 7 and features the Neurotoxin rule. When triggered, Neurotoxin will give the attack’s target the Stagger special condition. However, if the target has both the Bleed and Poison special conditions, Neurotoxin can give the target an Activated token instead!

Archangel is not the most durable character at his Threat Value, but he has some superpowers that help him get into the fight and stay in it. Charge is a well-known superpower that costs 2 Power and one action to give Archangel a move action followed by an attack action, which can be used to make either attack on his card if he has the Power. When he needs to defend himself from enemy attacks he can use his large metallic wings to shield his body from harm. Wing Shield triggers when he is targeted by a Physical or Energy attack or needs to make a dodge roll. For 2 Power, he adds 2 dice to his defense or dodge roll giving him a welcome boost to his durability.

Archangel is the Chosen of Apocalypse and this superpower shows it. When attacking, Archangel is able to change one die result to a Hit for each Wild he rolled, giving his attacks extra punch to deliver attacks befitting a character known as Death.

That’s all we have for Angel and Archangel! These two characters will fly onto your battlefields soon and herald the coming of Apocalypse! From Panel to Play: Shadowcat

Get ready to walk through walls and ignore falling buildings crashing on you. Today’s From Panel to Play is phasing into the room with Katherine Pryde, a.k.a. Shadowcat!

Katherine “Kitty” Pryde started suffering from severe headaches when she was thirteen years old. Unbeknownst to her, they were caused by her mutant powers awakening. Those powers attracted the attention of both the Hellfire Club and the X-Men. Emma Frost and Charles Xavier attempted to recruit her. Thanks to the Hellfire Club’s underhanded ways of doing so she enrolled in Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and became the youngest member of the X Men.

As her powers developed, she gained control of her ability to phase through solid objects. She quickly learned to master this ability, and she proved her capabilities in a complex Danger Room simulation when she dismantled it in minutes on her first attempt. She quickly became a valued member of the team. When the X-Men were kidnapped by the alien creatures known as the Brood, “Kitty” met Lockheed, a dragon-like alien creature who became her friend and ally. Lockheed saved her from the Brood and returned to Earth with her. The X-Men allowed him to remain in the mansion with her, and he has been her constant companion ever since.

Katherine Pryde joins Marvel: Crisis Protocol as Shadowcat. She is a Threat Value 3 character with fairly basic defenses combined with a Long move. Her Stamina of 5 on both sides and Defenses of 3/3/3 aren’t particularly robust, but she has a few tricks up her sleeve.

Shadowcat’s phasing abilities allow her to catch opponents unaware. Leaping out of a wall like a ghost is a surefire way to catch opponents flatfooted, leaving them battered and bewildered as she passes into the next wall after one attack and reappearing from another to strike again.

Her first attack, Phasing Strike, is a close range Physical attack with Strength 4 that generates Power for her equal to the damage dealt. While four attack dice is very low, her target does not benefit from Critical results in their Defense roll and cannot add additional dice to the roll due to those Critical results. Additionally, there is a chance Shadowcat will sidestep her opponent to get into a better position for her next move.

Her second attack involves Lockheed lending a helping fiery breath. Get ‘Em Lockheed! is a Strength 4 Range 3 attack with guaranteed Power generation that has a chance to leave the target with the Incinerate special condition as the dragon-like alien bathes the target in fire.
Her last attack is Intangible Assault. This midrange attack costs 3 Power for its 7 dice and has the same Critical result denying rules as Phasing Strike. To add insult to injury, Shadowcat may ghost her opponent and Place herself away from them after delivering the smackdown. Given the range on Intangible Assault, this Place can result in a lot of distance between her and her target allowing her to escape retribution.

Shadowcat’s mutant powers are best known for giving her the ability to phase through solid objects. Her first superpower, Phase Rush, is a 2 Power cost Active superpower that lets her Place within 2 of her current location as she dashes through the battlefield unimpeded by mundane things like garbage trucks and apartment buildings.

Kitty also uses this power to avoid incoming attacks and can grant her power to items and creatures she is touching. Can’t Touch This makes her or the nearby target of an attack insubstantial when faced with Physical or Energy attacks or collisions, granting them additional Defense or Dodge dice. Additionally, if the target is Thrown or Pushed by the triggering effect, they are granted a Place within Range 1 of their new location after the effect is resolved as Shadowcat pulls their intangible bodies out of the rubble before returning them to normal.

Her third and final superpower is Stealth. Shadowcat’s ability to phase allows her to blend in with her surroundings making her hard to see from a distance and keeping her safe from long range attacks.

That’s all for today’s look at Shadowcat! Be sure to check back later for yet another installment of From Panel to Play, the series where we give you your first look at how your favorite characters transition to the tabletop in Marvel: Crisis Protocol. From Panel to Play: Shadow King

Turn on the lights, my friend, and gird yourself against the things that go bump in the night. In today’s From Panel to Play, we will be risking our minds to peer into the depths of an eternal being of frightening power, someone who has no compunctions about using that power for nefarious purposes. Come join us in a look at Amahl Farouk, better known as Shadow King!

A threat whose true history is hidden in shadows, a being whose telepathic powers rival the strongest of mutants, and an entity without conscience, remorse, or empathy. These are some of the nicest things that can be said about the Shadow King. Amahl Farouk is the first confirmed physical form for the Shadow King and was noted for involving himself in a plot to overthrow the English throne alongside none other than Baron Strucker. The Shadow King is not limited to existing in the physical plane, however, and can survive as an extremely powerful ethereal being that stalks the astral plane.

Shadow King comes to spread his evil across the battlefield as a Threat 5 character with 6 Stamina on both his Healthy and Injured sides. He boasts a graduating set of defenses that begins with 3 Physical and moves up to 4 Energy and 5 Mystic defense.

Shadow King is a powerful addition to any squad and can reach out to touch enemy characters from a surprising distance. His main focus on the battlefield is subduing enemy characters through his attacks, but those attacks also have a host of special rules providing a variety of utility to this character.

The first thing we’ll be reviewing on his card is the active superpower Astral Fiend. This superpower really defines the character, and understanding it is fundamental to understanding the tricks he can pull. This superpower costs him 3 power and an action to use but allows him to place a Projection token within range 3 of himself. This representation of his essence on the astral plane allows you to measure the Range for his attacks and superpowers from the token rather than the character. This means that when this superpower is in play, his attacks have a minimum range of 5! It does have some downsides, though, as enemy mystic attacks can also target the token rather than needing to target the character. Note that you can’t target the token with Physical or Energy attacks, however.

The first attack the Shadow King employs is his ability to bear down on his enemy with the overwhelming might of his telepathic capabilities, effectively placing a Mental Shackle across their minds. This Range 3, Strength 6 attack costs zero power to use and provides him power equal to the damage he deals. It also has two special rules available to it, one that applies the Root special condition when he rolls a wild and one that allows him to Advance the target character Short if his attack deals any damage.

Shadow King also loves to be able to use an opponent’s power against themselves, which is never more evident than when he unleashes an Astral Disintegration. This is a Range 2 attack that costs four power to use and starts at a base Strength of 5. As a master of fighting in the astral realm, it has a special rule that prevents the target character from rerolling or modifying their defense dice. The real strength behind this attack though is the special rule that allows him to add dice to the attack roll equal to the amount of power the target has. It is capped at a maximum of 5 additional dice, but you have to be careful if you’re lying in wait for Amahl Farouk, as he may just turn the tables on you!

As a being that exists more as a collection of power than as a physical object, he is also able to make use of his Immortal Essence. This superpower costs him 3 power to use and allows him to remove up to 3 damage from himself. You may think you have destroyed him, but this is a foe that can always come back.

As a being of dark desires and malevolent powers, even coming near the Shadow King can be a painful experience. For 4 Power, he can reactively unleash his Nightmare Visions. This superpower can be used to deal damage to enemy characters ending an Advance within range 3 of him. It also allows you to Advance the enemy character if you manage to deal them damage. It’s difficult for beings of such power to restrain their telepathic emanations when they want to, for someone who couldn’t care less about the suffering he inflicts, its not even a consideration!

His final superpower represents the fact that he is an Omega Level Multi-Versal Entity and not just any mere supervillain. This superpower means he gains an additional power during the power phase, helping ensure he always has the power to enforce his will across the battlefield.
