From Panel to Play: Supergiant

CP81 Supergiant

Mind over matter is a common saying, but in most cases, it doesn’t mean that you intend to reach out with your mental powers to crush all who dare to stand in your way—unless you’re the subject of today’s article, that is.

This time on From Panel to Play, we’re looking at an omnipath of the highest (Black) order: it’s Supergiant!

Supergiant is a central member of Thanos’ Black Order. This mental vampire breaks down and devours the intellect of those who oppose her. A telepathic parasite, she can control and alter the minds of others through her masterful mental manipulation.

As a part of the Black Order, Supergiant was one of five powerful beings Thanos recruited to subjugate whole worlds. While she lacks the raw physical power of some of her companions, Supergiant makes up for her limitations through the unfathomable potency of her mental powers. She has crushed the intellects of some of the greatest minds in the cosmos at Thanos’ command.

Supergiant is a potent new member of the Black Order affiliation, thanks to her crushing omnipathic powers. She brings a range of abilities to bolster her companions and devastate her foes for her three Threat.

Her basic attack, Mental Vampire, is a Range 3, Strength 5 Mystic attack that, thanks to the Drain Life special rule, allows her to remove a point of damage each time she harms her foe—an excellent way to mitigate her 5 Vitality. However, for 8 Power, she can unleash a devastating mental assault in the form of Devastate Intellect, which hits at Strength 8 and has a slew of special rules. Devastate Intellect does not deal damage to its intended target, in the traditional sense. Instead it strips away Power for each point of damage it would inflict. But this attack can do so, so much more. As you accumulate wilds results, it can also impose the Stun and Stagger conditions. The Devour Mind special rule kicks in if you’re lucky enough to collect the right attack roll results (including a Critical, Wild, and two Failures!). Rather than dealing damage, this flips the target character to Dazed or KOs them outright as Supergiant consumes their mind.

On top of one of the most devastating attacks on the battlefield, Supergiant has powers that give her more significant presence on the battlefield, like the telepathic control over Civilian tokens inflicted by her Submit! superpower, or the reactive superpower Supreme Control, allows her to prevent nearby allies from being pushed telekinetically.

Looking at Supergiant’s Stat Card, you might be surprised by her exceedingly low physical defense; but worry not! Her innate Ethereal superpower allows her to avoid debilitating physical attacks and collisions, reducing all damage inflicted to a single point as she phases out of physical existence for a moment. She drops any objective token she’s carrying when she does so, but that is a small price to pay to turn an Asgardian’s mighty blow into a light scratch!

With the price of her game-changing Devastate Intellect attack and the utility of her other superpowers, getting Power will be vital to using Supergiant effectively. Fortunately, her second innate superpower, Omnipathy, allows Supergiant to build up her power pool whenever a nearby enemy rolls a Critical in any roll!

That is all for our first look at this mind-bending member of the Black Order.
