What Would the Head Judge Enter in the Path of the Worthy? – Part 2

A Worthy Checkin!

Welcome back, everyone! Leading up to Adepticon, Dallas Kemp, our Creative Director and Head Judge for AMG’s Marvel: Crisis Protocol painting competition, The Path of the Worthy, will be making his own example entry featuring Green Goblin and the Amazing Spider-Man. Today we’re taking a look at his progress on his base and plinth from over the holidays as well as what’s coming next on the project.

In the linked video, Dallas shows how he’s kitbashed several pieces together to create the base to support and interact with the characters. First he chopped up and refurbished pieces from the NYC apartment so that they could fit on the angled plinth.

Dallas also showed off the adjusted antenna from the Rivals Panel: Weapon X Program. Dallas scrapped the satellite dish for the sake of composition before affixing it to the roof of the NYC apartment on the plinth.

In order to make Green Goblin’s smoke trail, he twisted wire together and bonded it with two part epoxy. To this, he added some expanding foam clouds. He picked up the foam from the craft store and used a popsicle stick to whip it to reduce the amount it would expand. Then he adds the foam to the wire to create the smoke trail with an old paint brush. Then he’s able to twist the wire around the base to his taste. He intends to keep building on that piece and adding detail and interest throughout the process – and of course, Green Goblin will be affixed to the end of the smoke trail.

Dallas also showed off his work on the backdrop, made of several “panels” that can be painted to make it look like this piece is leaping off the pages of a comic book. Green Goblins smoke trail will be wrapped around this backdrop and place him at the upper left hand side of the piece, which Dallas explained would frame him in the orange panel and make his green garb pop. He’ll later add black graphic lines on the orange panel to lend a sense of movement and aggression. Dallas made the choice to angle the panels on the backdrop to allow for the scene to change as the viewer experiences the piece from a 360 perspective. As the viewer moves across the piece, the focus will shift from Green Goblin to the Amazing Spider-man.

Dallas showed off a tiny camera he crafted over the break Peter Parker to have placed up in the antenna so that he can grab a good action shot. The story is all in the details! Viewers were also able to provide feedback for where they thought the camera would work best during the work session. He plans to create some webbing next to make it look like it was mounted there by spidey.

As far as Spider-man’s placement, Dallas showed off an – in-progress bomb explosion at the base of the antenna that our hero will be dodging away from near the bottom right side of the piece. During the work session, he began to build out more sculpted details for the bomb burst.

Late this month, check back for more progress from Dallas on his example entry for The Path of the Worthy.
