What is Crisis Protocol?

02/23/2020

Greetings, dear reader, and welcome to our very first installment of Atomic Mass transmissions. What are transmissons, you ask? This is the place you can depend on for all your news, preview, hobby, tactics, and general fun content related to Atomic Mass Games’ upcoming hobby miniatures game, Marvel: Crisis Protocol.

So those of you who are new to tabletop gaming (welcome!) you might be wondering, what is a hobby miniatures game? Hobby miniatures games encompass many different styles of game, from large war simulators with dozens of miniatures, to smaller narrative games with just a handful. These games are designed to be highly social, with you and one or more opponents sitting around a tabletop rolling dice, using your minis to duke it out, and most important of all, having fun and making memories. But no matter how different the gameplay might be, all these games share in the hobby aspect, which we’ll discuss further in our next transmission.

So now that we’ve covered what hobby miniature games are, let’s get down to brass tacks, what is Crisis Protocol?

Crisis Protocol is a tactical skirmish miniatures game. At the start of the game, players select squads made up of their favorite Marvel characters and use them to clash over an interactive battlefield to be the first to complete their mission objectives. Crisis Protocol is lovingly created by a team of life-long Marvel comics fans, who wanted to bring the excitement and narrative drama of the Marvel Universe straight to the tabletop.

Throw Captain America’s shield and have it ricochet off of multiple enemies. Wield the unfathomable power of the Cosmic Cube and bring the Red Skull’s masterplans to fruition. Lift up buildings and chuck them at enemies to prove that Hulk is the strongest there is. With Crisis Protocol, our design goals were simple; make each character feel true to the source material and have each game feel like it was ripped right out of the pages of your favorite Marvel stories. Studio Head and Crisis Protocol Designer Will Shick had this to say:

“I’ve been an avid Marvel fan since I was six years old and my mom bought me some VHS tapes of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. The thing that always kept me coming back, hungry for more was not just the fantastic Marvel characters but the incredibly rich and compelling stories those characters were a part of. It was this element that I really wanted to make the beating heart of Crisis Protocol, to make the game a vehicle for people to not only recreate their favorite stories and team-ups from the volumes of Marvel comics, but to create a game that let them tell their own stories with their friends that still felt as if they came right from the latest issue of Marvel comics.”

This is just a taste of what’s to come. In the following days and weeks, we’ll give you an in-depth look at Crisis Protocol, all leading up to our game’s release this fall!

Until next time!
