The Path of the Worthy 2023: Silver Review

12/06/2023

Welcome back to our Path of the Worthy Review! As we approach Adepticon and the second year of our Marvel: Crisis Protocol painting competition, we have invited Head Judge Dallas Kemp to chat about all the medaled entries from the past year and share what made them so noteworthy to the judges in an effort to help this year’s hopefuls prepare for the show. Today, we’re digging into the Silver entries for each category. Dallas, take it away!

Category — Squads

Tyson Koch — “Black Order”

Tyson’s scenic base brings the story to the squad and lets you know the Black Order has arrived. The addition of MODOK and his conversion is a nice touch!

Jeremy Lorimor — “Sentinels Arrive”

Jeremy really tells a story with these Sentinels led by the nefarious Cassandra Nova; the magenta power effects on each mini ties them together and the excellent road debris sets the stage perfectly.

Category — Dual

Kevin Witt — “Breaking News”

Spidey and Green Goblin always make a great showdown! Kevin brought some interesting storytelling to this piece with his use of light and composition. You can feel the energy of the battle over the city streets.

Category — Single

Nick Jolliff — “Mr. Sinister”

Nick Jolliff created an entire control panel for the enigmatic Mr Sinister. The little details that were displayed over the piece made it a joy to continuously pour over as your eye searched for more to admire. The magenta glow adds a nice counter to the dramatic blue of the suit.

Rich Erickson — “Gamora”

Rich Erickson brought this Gamora to life ready to take down all who stand in her way as the most deadly assassin in the galaxy. The smooth whites and excellent face were stand out features on this deadly entry into the single category.

Jesse Pomaski — “Mysterio”

Mysterio is up to no good, but is looking good doing it. Jesse brought Mysterio to a full demonstration of power with the addition of an eye catching sculpted effect. The soft blues of the effect give it a dream-like quality while Mysterio himself is rendered in a vibrant colors and a sharp style that draws the audience’s eyes to him.

Zach Kamm — “Mysterio”

Zack brings more mystery to the Worthy with their take on Mysterio. The glass dome is particularly eye catching and the purple in the plinth is a very nice touch to bring the piece all together in a cohesive manner.

Mike Cousins — “Comic Cover Thanos”

Mike Cousins created a full back drop dripping with Kirby Krackle to give his Mad Titan the ambiance he deserves. This piece feels like a 3 dimensional comic cover thanks to the Thanos title across the back and Thanos himself stepping toward the viewer with gleeful arrogance.

David Diamonstone — “Iron Man”

Iron Man leaps to action in David Diamondstone’s Single entry submission. The crisp reds and golds bring this piece to life and the white hot blue effects show that Iron Man is ready to tackle any challenge. The rugged and imperfect plinth adds to the overall story that is portrayed and shows a great bit of subtle storytelling.

Kelsey Hattam — “Kingpin by Firelight”

Kingpin by firelight puts the powerful frame of Wilson Fisk into a new “light” hehe. The almost sympathetic angle of the painting is a wonderful and unexpected direction to portray Fisk which leaves the viewer creating stories themselves while viewing this piece.

Jason “Llama” Colbeck — “Juggernaut — Unstoppable”

The Juggernaut is causing a ruckus! Jason created a scene that literally breaks the walls. The full force of the Juggernaut gets captured in this silver winning entry and tells so much story with even more energy. Take a look at the helmet as well, as the reflection sells the feel of the material quite well.

Jason Gibeault, Splintered Brush Studio — “And I, Am, Iron Man”

Jason created an excellent homage to Tony Stark in this silver winning piece of storytelling. The composition of the rubble pulls the eye in and the yellow/orange backdrop perfectly frames Tony and makes the viewer want to lean in to take a deeper look.

And that’s it for Silver! We’ll be back with the Gold Medal entrees soon and we hope you’ll consider joining us at Adepticon and entering a piece for The Path of the Worthy next year!
