Staff Hobby Highlight: Ultimate Spider-Man, Prowler, Spider-Man 2099

09/25/2025

With the release of Marvel: Crisis Protocol Spider-Verse character packs, CP169 Prowler, Spider-Man 2099 & Ultimate Spider-Man and CP170 Silk, Spider-Man Noir & Spider-Ham, just around the corner, the Atomic Mass Games team took some time to paint up their favorite new additions from the Spider-Verse. From high-flying acrobatics to gritty detective work, each of these characters brings something unique to the table, and our staff were eager to bring them to life with a brush in hand.

This week we’ll be sharing the staff’s take on the characters found in CP169: Ultimate Spider-Man, Prowler, Spider-Man 2099.

Gearing up with the team to paint some of the new Spider characters, I had to get my hands on that new Miles Morales sculpt. His action-packed pose demonstrating his venom punch just excited me and made me eager to get some paint on him. After building the mini I spent some time looking at the wonderful costumes featured in the Spider-Man: Miles Morales video game and was inspired by the T.R.A.C.K. suit. Its stark white and black accents are very eye-catching and I felt that it would look great once the orange energy effect was painted on. I used some light greys and blue to paint the suit, only bringing in white at the very end for highlights. Red and orange finished off the red areas and the spider lenses were painted in whites and blues. For the energy effect, I used yellows and whites with a glaze of orange to make it feel powerful. I added a touch of the orange to the areas of Miles near the power source. Now Miles is ready to hit the table top with some panache and pop.

When the call came around the office for the chance to paint up some Spider folk, I immediately knew I wanted to paint Miguel. I will never forget going to my first comic book convention with my dad and being able to grab the foil number 1 for Spider-Man 2099. When he came up on the release schedule I immediately claimed him for myself to sculpt, and getting to paint it now was a lot of fun. On a bit of a whim I painted him in the red and white seen on the alternate version of his suit.

This Prowler is Aaron Davis, Miles Morales’ uncle. That family tie with Spider-Man makes the criminal acts of Prowler feel intensely emotionally charged to me. Seeing that tragedy play out on the table is very satisfying to me. I plan to include Prowler in my Spider-Foes and Criminal Syndicate rosters and wait for my moment to deploy across from Miles. I really wanted to express that tie to Spider-Man and that intensity with my Prowler miniature. To that end, I had the plan to incorporate the deep blue and bright red Spider-Man’s suit as the shade and highlight for the primary purple color of my Prowler miniature and especially emphasize it using the folds of the cloak. I pulled up some reference images to decide where to paint the purple and decided to go with everywhere but the wrists and ankles. I usually like the effect of a warmer colored highlight and a cooler colored shade, and I really pushed that with Prowler.

For the shade, it was easy to just mix in a dark blue with my base color to create the color I wanted. For the highlight, I mixed in bright red with a lighter purple that I would normally use to highlight my purple to get the warm magenta highlight color. After completing the purple, I wanted the gauntlets to match the intensity of my purple. It was easy to achieve that on the ridged gauntlets with a lime green paint and a heavy wash of a blueish green into the recesses. After finishing the green, I wanted another color to play off the intensity of the other colors. After looking at reference images again, I chose a dark grey blue for the gloves, boots, and face mask. Finally, I did a small edge highlight of a purple/grey color on Prowler’s face to try to bring it all together.

You’ll be able to bring these characters home and start your own adventures when the CP169: Ultimate Spider-Man, Prowler & Spider-Man 2099 Character Pack & CP170: Silk, Spider-Man Noir & Spider-Ham Character Pack hit stores in October.
