Staff Hobby Feature – Customizable Super Tactical Command Droid

07/01/2026

The Separatist Alliance relied on precision, scale, and cold calculation to wage war against the Republic. At the center of that machine were Tactical Droids, commanders designed to process battlefield data and execute strategy without hesitation. As the war escalated, more advanced variants emerged, pushing both form and function into new territory.

In this Atomic Mass Transmission, the studio team showcases their take on the Super Tactical Droid through the Customizable Super Tactical Command Droid Expansion.

When it came time to assemble my droid commander, I thought about the kind of army I wanted to build and kept coming back to the aesthetic of wheel bikes. I wanted something that could keep up with that speed, which led me to the spider legs. From there, I pulled inspiration from sport and muscle cars for the paint scheme. I think it will look striking across an entire fast moving droid force.

I field the current Super Tactical Droid as a commander in most of my Separatist Alliance armies, so I was excited to get my hands on this kit and expand those options. The art for the three legged Super Tactical Command Droid pushed me to go all in and build mine to feel as aggressive as possible, using both the electrostaff and heavy arm cannon. I based the miniature with rubble made from a spare barricade to give it a conquering presence.

Since I helped playtest the Super Tactical Command Droid, I also wanted to explore a different role on the tabletop focused on enemy disruption. I have always liked how varied the silhouettes are within the Separatist army, and I tend to run lists with very little repetition. This build fits that aesthetic much better than previous commanders I have used.

For paint, I stayed consistent with my existing scheme inspired by beetles, using green and brass shells with black limbs to frame those brighter colors. I used black lining to define the joints and chest plate, along with bright green edge highlights to emphasize the sharper shapes. I was happy with those results overall, but less satisfied with the texture I created on the curved plates. I will keep experimenting, but for now I will focus on smoother blends until I find something that works better!

I was pretty excited to work on this project! I enjoy playing Separatists and the army relies heavily on its Tactical Droids, so I wanted mine to feel like a true battlefield commander.

I chose the pointing arm and cape to reinforce that commanding presence. I built up the base with a crate so the miniature stands above the rest, like a general directing troops.

For the paint scheme, I used the dark purple from my existing army with high contrast black accents. I selected the electrostaff for both its look and the opportunity to introduce a bright pink energy effect for contrast. I finished with edge highlights and basing material to tie it back into the force.

I was excited to paint to work on this project as well! The spider legs immediately stood out to me, since they give the miniature a distinct and unusual silhouette. I wanted this to read as a commander rather than a front line fighter, so I chose the pointing arms and tactical hologram to reinforce that role.

The small actuator arms are a great detail and can be placed in a lot of different ways. I liked the idea that they were handling inputs and controls while the primary arms were focused elsewhere.

For painting, I used selections from the ProAcryl AMP sets to achieve the ceramic armor plates and darker steel tones I was aiming for.

Awesome work, Team! Unlike their organic counterparts, Super Tactical Droids do not hesitate or question. They adapt, calculate, and execute. These builds reflect that philosophy, each one tailored to a specific battlefield role while still feeling like part of a larger, relentless machine.
