Webs have been spun all over today’s From Panel to Play as we open the portal to the Spider-Verse with one of two new packs adding characters to the Web Warriors. The various spider-people are well known for their ability to create and escape sticky situations. Today’s characters are no different. This pack introduces Silk, Spider-Man Noir, and Spider-Ham to the game expanding on the Web Warrior roster in unexpected ways.
It’s been a long time since Marvel: Crisis Protocol received a Threat Value 2 character, and most people are likely surprised to find it is a Web Warrior! Peter Porker was created when May Porker, a scientist, irradiated herself and bit Peter. Peter was a spider living in her home. He soon transformed into a pig like May and took the name Spider-Ham when he realized he still had his spider abilities and could use them to fight crime!
Spider-Ham is one of the most outlandish characters ever added to Marvel: Crisis Protocol. Players will not be surprised to find his defenses and Stamina pool on the smaller size, but he has a couple superpowers that will keep his foes on their toes as the battle goes on. He is also a Size 1 character, another stat that is extremely rare, with a Medium Speed, and he has the classic superpower, Wallcrawler. Once we get into the details, however, things get wild!
Porker Hijinks is his first attack. This close-range attack has a Strength of 4 and a long list of special rules that could potentially trigger. This attack can cause the Slow and Stun special conditions as well as Push enemies and allow Spider-Ham to Advance. However, luck will need to be on your side to get all the required dice results to trigger these effects!
His second attack is Here’s Pie in Your Eye, a long-range attack that will leave the enemy character with the Shock special condition as they will have to clean pie off their face before being effective in battle. Who You Calling a Cartoon? will cause the target to gain Stagger from this Outrageously Oversized Cartoon Hammer if the target is already suffering from the Shock and Stun special conditions.
Backing up these attacks are some excellent superpowers. Spider-Ham’s Web Yoink is reminiscent of other characters who have the Web Line, but it has a unique twist. Instead of being a guaranteed form of movement, Web Yoink’s effect is determined by a die roll. Half the time he will be able to Push most enemies towards himself–half the time he gets Pushed into them! Spider-Ham does not have a lot of ways to generate Power for himself, but this is his only superpower that uses it.
Spider-Ham has two other Innate superpowers. The first is Animation Domination. This superpower reduces the damage he takes by 1 which can be the difference between staying in the fight or being smashed flat like a pancake. His second Innate superpower is Spider-Nonsense. Low Threat Value characters like Spider-Ham have long been used to run off with objective tokens and this rule helps limit his ability to do that.
Spider-Ham’s release would be nothing without an equally wild Team Tactic Card to go with him. Caught in a Ham is just that card. This card features effects like Corny Joke and …Is That a Cartoon Pig? that can leave opponents with special conditions, but in some cases, Peter might be shouting, “Oh No!”
Coming along with Peter Porker through the multiverse is Spider-Man Noir. This version of Peter Parker hails from Earth-90214, a universe where Earth is still in the 1930s and he plays the role of super sleuth as often as he does superhero. This Threat Value 3 character has fairly standard Stamina and defense values to go along with his Medium movement and the near ubiquitous, for Web Warriors, Wallcrawler superpower.
While Spider-Man Noir lacks the movement options of many of his fellow Web Warriors, once he gets into the fight he can dish out some serious damage with The Ol’ One, Two. The “One” attack is a 4 Strength attack that generates Power for him based on the Damage dealt to the target. With a Range of 3, this attack gives Spider-Man Noir some reach. Following up on this, there are two special rules that do a good job of setting it apart from similar attacks. The first is Elusive which allows Spider-Man Noir to Advance a Short move after making this attack. The second represents the “Two” in The Ol’ One, Two by granting him 3 extra attack dice if he makes the attack a second time against a target, he already hit this Activation.
Backing this attack up is his Crime Fighting Arsenal attack. This 3 Power cost attack is a Range 4 beam attack that leaves targets with the Slow and Shock special conditions if it deals damage.
Web Warriors tend to be good at dealing with the battlefield and Spider-Man Noir does this through Hit the Pavement. This superpower is only 2 Power and allows him to grab terrain features within Range 3 and throw them Medium.
His defensive stat line of 3/3/3 with 5 Stamina on both sides of his card may seem modest, but he has Spider-Sense to help him get the most out of those defense dice and Inured to Pain to reduce the damage that gets through, making him a tougher character than he might seem at first look.
Spider-Man Noir’s stat card showcases his superhero nature, but his sleuthing skills are notably absent. His skill as a detective is presented on his Team Tactic Card, Spider-Sleuth. When played at the start of the first Round of the game, Spider-Sleuth unlocks a minigame where Spider-Man Noir collects evidence and extracts a confession from his foes. Should he be successful, his squad will earn 2 VPs!
The final character in this pack is Cindy Moon, a.k.a. Silk. Created by the bite of the same spider that bit Peter Parker, Cindy’s powers manifested in often uncontrollable ways at first but over time she learned to control them.
Silk enters Marvel: Crisis Protocol as a Threat Value 4 character with a solid stat line and a Long movement Speed. She also has the classic Wallcrawler along with a host of attacks and superpowers that should remind players of the rest of the Web Warriors.
Her first attack is Spider Strike. This is a standard attack that has the ability to Push defenders in any direction. This can combine with one of her superpowers to create some incredible moments highlighting her agility. The second attack on her card is the Fingertip Spinnerets. This beam generates a little bit of Power and might Slow defenders. Her final attack is The Spectacular Spinning Jenny, an area attack that pulls enemies to her before allowing her to place far away from the group. This attack has a fairly high cost at 5 Power, but it can trigger her superpowers creating some incredible moments.
Caught in the Web is her first superpower that will attempt to damage enemies that end any movement within Range 3 of her. If it deals damage, Silk can Advance Short. Two of her attacks can trigger this, helping her secure a Daze or KO and/or allowing her to escape the battle. Additionally, there is no restriction on the number of times this superpower can be used. On its own this may be a tough superpower to use a lot, but her connection to a powerful spider-totem gives her an edge here.
Silk is an avatar of the spider-totem known as The Bride. This accounts for her enhanced superpowers when compared to Peter Parker who was bit by the same spider. The Web of the Bride superpower allows her to gain 1 Power whenever an enemy suffering from the Slow special conditions ends any movement within Range 3 of her. Combining Web of the Bride and Caught in the Web with the All Webbed Up Team Tactic Card can lead to some amazing combos featuring lots of moving enemies and a Silk that is nowhere to be found after the webs settle.
Her connection to The Bride doesn’t end there though. She also has Silk Sense, her own unique form of spider-sense that allows her to reroll up to two defense dice when defending or dodging–including Failures.
The Bride doesn’t just enhance the typical spider powers found in the Web Warriors. It also grants new ones. Spider-Totem: The Bride grants her a couple potent abilities when played during the Power Phase. For the rest of the round Silk’s attacks may be changed from Physical to Mystic. Additionally, this card grants Silk a single-use effect that grants her or an ally the ability to reroll all of their attack or defense dice.
Silk, Spider-Ham, and Spider-Man Noir are on their way to a tabletop near you soon! Pick them up at your local store or order online, and with that, this Transmission swings away!
