With the release of Marvel: Crisis Protocol Spider-Verse character packs, CP169 Prowler, Spider-Man 2099 & Ultimate Spider-Man and CP170 Silk, Spider-Man Noir & Spider-Ham, just around the corner, the Atomic Mass Games team took some time to paint up their favorite new additions from the Spider-Verse. From high-flying acrobatics to gritty detective work, each of these characters brings something unique to the table, and our staff were eager to bring them to life with a brush in hand.
This week we’ll be sharing the staff’s take on the characters found in 170: Silk, Spider-Ham & Spider-Man Noir.
Silk is an exciting addition to my Marvel: Crisis Protocol collection. I started off by assembling Silk, which to my delight was easy. The miniature assembled very intuitively, and the clever contact point for the webbing she has in her hand to the back of the crashed glider really gave support to that webbing. Then I painted Silk in the common color scheme of all my Marvel: Crisis Protocol miniatures. Purple and black. Using the sculpted lines on her spider suit as a guide, I was able to really make the pattern on the suit pop purple. Since Silk is about catching enemy characters in her webs, I wanted to highlight this by making the web on her miniature stand out. To do this I built up from a shade of magenta, working it all the way up to white in successive layers. Then I did some free hand on the base to make it look like a comic-style spider web spreading out from the crashed glider. Lastly, was Silk’s hair. Most of my Marvel: Crisis Protocol miniatures have pink or purple hair, but with all the pink of the webbing, I went with something different. I chose blue to make it so the hair would stand out against all the webbing and highlighted it all the way to white to give it a high contrast animation feel.
All in all, this miniature was great fun to assemble and paint!
When I was asked which new Web-Warrior from CP170 I wanted to paint, I knew it had to be Spider-Man Noir.
I chose Noir for two reasons: I wanted a painting challenge, and I LOVE his rules.
One of the things I really enjoy about Marvel: Crisis Protocol is that each miniature gives me a new opportunity to try or improve a paint scheme or technique. I REALLY struggle with textures, and Noir’s coat, pants, and base provided multiple chances to get better. Noir is also entirely grey and black—colors that I am not good at painting! To try to capture the monochromatic look, I decided to only use three paints for the entire miniature, including the base. I airbrushed the base coat on Noir, then brushed on a layer and highlights. The base is almost entirely airbrushed, with only a few line highlights.
I like how Spider-Man Noir brings a different approach to the Web-Warriors. No displacement tricks or running with Extracts here’ Noir is all about getting in the bad guy’s face and giving them the Ol’ One, Two. His Team Tactic Card Spider-Sleuth was incredibly fun to design. It’s an homage to old-school detective stories, letting players do real gumshoe stuff to score extra VPs. We’re really excited to see the fun stories that come out of that one.
What’s not to love? He’s got moxie.
Getting the opportunity to paint Spider-Ham for this hobby article was a real full-circle moment for me. During the sculpting process, I wanted to showcase that, despite being small, Spider-Ham exudes energy and was allowed to really lean into that cartoony nature of the character with an optional onomatopoeia and his comically large mallet on full display. With Spider-Ham, I really wanted to push myself with contrast and vibrancy since he is so small to really make him pop on the table. I’m excited to see Spider-Ham join the rest of his Spider friends on the table!
You’ll be able to bring these characters home and start your own adventures when the CP169: Ultimate Spider-Man, Prowler & Spider-Man 2099 Character Pack & CP170: Silk, Spider-Man Noir & Spider-Ham Character Pack hit stores in October.
